One million people worldwide commit suicide every year. That is one death every 40 seconds.
Seventy percent of people who commit suicide tell others about his/her plan or give them a warning. Some family and friends have no idea how to react or what to do to help someone who is suicidal or depressed. One of the best things someone can do is tell the person who is feeling this way to get professional help from a therapist, school counselor, or doctor.
Most of the time, someone who is suicidal is feeling lonely and thinks he/she has no one to talk to. Sometimes, people do not feel comfortable talking to a professional and are more comfortable talking to a friend or family member. If someone you know is suicidal, help him/her get through it and let them know that you are there for him/her. For safety, you should always let a trusted adult (like a school counselor or parent) know that someone, who is not comfortable with professional help, is suicidal.
Suicide is a serious symptom of severe depression. There are many signs of depression including but not excluding: a change in sleeping patterns, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, fatigue, and frequent somber moods.
If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts or signs of depression, please let someone know immediately, so he/she can get the help he/she needs.
