Thanksgiving has always been an essential part of American life, and most Americans look forward to the turkey, fall colors, football, and family that comes with this special holiday. Although Thanksgiving is most often celebrated with relatives sitting at a table, praying, and sharing an abundance of food, the holiday was not always celebrated in this same way.
Thanksgiving started out as a harvest festival by the Pilgrims, who were one of the first colonists in America. In 1621, the pilgrims’ first harvest was recognized by a feast for all of the citizens on successfully surviving the winter and harsh climate of the New World. They gathered and prayed to thank God on their fortunate success. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally since the year 1789 when George Washington proclaimed it a holiday while he was president.
Thanksgiving is one of the most cherished holidays in the United States, and its rich history holds a lot of significance on the beginnings of our country. As we enjoy it, we should also remember its reason and the hope that was spread during its creation!
