Recently, a new wide-scale study in the medical field has found a correlation between one’s Body Mass Index (BMI) and the size of their brain. Gray matter comprises a majority of an individual’s brain cells; this UK study found an inverse relationship among one’s body fat and the amount of gray matter present in his or her brain. Additionally, shrinkage in a myriad of portions of the brain, particularly regions that are auxiliary in the motivation and reward aspects of one’s life, has been found to burgeon along with an increase in excess weight. Although a correlation has been established, the causation is still under research. It could very well be obesity causing the decrease in brain size, or vice versa, or it can also be one external factor contriving both. You should always strive to maintain reasonable proportions for your height and weight to ensure that debilitations like dementia don’t arise in your life.
