2019 Women’s World Cup

This summer, the 8th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place again. The competition will start on June 7th and end on July 7th. In March 2015, France won the ability to host the event, which will be the first time it hosts the Women’s World Cup. Twenty-four teams qualified for the tournament this year, however, will any of them be able to defeat the defending champions--the United States?

In order of their ranking, here are the teams that will be competing this year:

Initially, 12 cities were candidates to host the event, however, in June 2017, it was narrowed down to 9 cities. Lyon, Paris, Nice, Montpellier, Rennes, Le Havre, Valenciennes, Reims, and Grenoble, France were the lucky cities chosen.

The mascot for the tournament was chosen on May 12th, 2018 who was unveiled as “ettie.” Her first public appearance was in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. She comes from a long line of feathered mascots and is known as the daughter of Footix, who was the official mascot for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. FIFA wrote that she is “a young chicken with passion for life and football.”

This World Cup is going to be used by UEFA to pick three teams for the 2020 Summer Olympics women’s football tournament. Who do you think is going to win this year?
