We all know Ariana Grande as the high-pitched, sweatshirt-dress wearing, pony tail swinging drama queen. But recently she has become a queen of more than just pop and drama; recycling has become quite her thing. No, she's not seperating plastics from paper and paper from trash. She's recycling other artists' lyrics and rhythms.
The release of "7 rings" and "break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored," was accompanied by a large side of comments stating that parts of the songs sounded familiar.
If you have heard the song, "My Favorite Things," from the movie The Sound of Music, you will quickly recognize the similarities between its rhythm and the rhythm of "7 rings."
In "break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored," Grande uses the lyrics, "You could say I'm hatin' if you want to. But I only hate on her 'cause I want you. Say I'm trippin' if you feel like. But you without me ain't right." These lyrics are 99.99% the same as NSYNC's song, "It Makes Me Ill."
She gave credit for her sampling of both songs, so she is not under fire for copyrighting.
Grande is no stranger to sampling songs; in fact, she has used many songs across a variety of genres on her own tracks. These include artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, Fergie, and the Beastie Boys.
By sampling these songs, Grande has brought them back into the light. Much like tossing your plastic water bottle into the recycling bin rather than the trash and letting someone make something new out of it, Ariana has done the same with her new songs.
Let's just say if I had a song, I'd want Ari to sample it.
