On February 13th, 2019, the National Aeronautics and Space Association announced that the Opportunity Mars rover had completed its mission. After a severe dust storm in June 2018, the rover never re-booted. Despite many attempts to communicate with Opportunity, or “Oppy,” NASA declared the rover's mission complete.
Oppy landed on Mars in 2004, as a part of the “Mars Exploration Program” to gather information on the mysterious red planet. During his mission, “Oppy” found evidence of water, took 228,771 pictures, traveled 28.06 miles, and far outlived its life expectancy.
NASA sent “Ill be seeing you” by Billie Holiday as a last attempt to communicate with the rover.
Thank you, Oppy, you were truly out of this world.
