Mukbang (먹는 방송) is a Korean word meaning “eating broadcast.” It involves someone eating food on camera. It was popularized in Korea starting in 2009. This Korean trend started to travel westward and is now a popular form of entertainment in America. Some American Youtube channels such as “Zach Choi” have garnered over 40 million views on his mukbangs. Eating food on camera sounds harmless, however there is a noticeable difference between the two countries versions. In Korea, the portion size is seemingly smaller than the ones in America. With titles such as “10,000 Calorie Eating Show” it is hard to believe that mukbang is a sustainable career for people that make money off of these type of videos. Without a workout out routine and healthy eating off camera, some “mukbangers” have gained a noticeable amount of weight and some such as “Mr Beast” have had to stop all together due to health concerns. The people watching mukbangs also are at risk for unhealthy eating because of the cravings these videos can induce. Should mukbangs in America be regulated like it is in Korea to stop obesity that is already a growing issue in the States?
