This past weekend (January 30th and 31st), the Spain Park Law Academy had three of their mock trial teams participate in one of the preliminary district rounds for the annual Alabama YMCA’s Youth Judicial competition. After weeks of hard work from the students and additional support from the Law Academy teachers: Mr. Thompson, Dr. Smith, and Coach Pate, the teams were able to compete virtually through Zoom. The three Spain Park teams that participated were all on the side of the Plaintiff and included:
Team 201:
Vincent Indovina
Morgan Patrick
Josh Phillips
Anna Kate Morris
Olivia Frazier
Megan Miles
Team 202:
Selma Maric
Lydia Faris
Sawyer Smith
Riley Sandford
Grace Norman
Isabella Campos
Team 203:
Camila López
Abigail Linderman
Adie Carter
Danielle Brown
Olivia Garibay
Sara Quiceno
These three teams competed on Saturday, January 30th against a few selected teams in this second organized district competition. On Sunday, January 31st at 2:00 pm results from the competition were released on the Alabama Youth in Government Instagram and website pages.
The Spain Park Law Academy is grateful to be able to announce that Team 201 and Team 202 will be advancing to the state competition which will be held virtually on March 6th.
As well as having two teams advance to the state Youth Judicial competition, some of our Spain Park competing members received individual awards, and they are the following:
Outstanding Attorneys
Vincent Indovina
Lydia Faris
Camila Lopez
Outstanding Witnesses
Selma Maric
Josh Phillips
Finally, in addition to these individual accomplishments, the conference was led by our very own Samad Gillani as he served as the conference’s Chief Justice. He will continue to serve as Chief Justice until after the final trial round of the competition when the newly elected Chief Justice will be announced.
On the weekend of February 13th and 14th, Spain Park Law Academy will have three more teams on the side of the defense participating in the final preliminary district competition for this year’s Youth Judicial. There will be more updates about those participants to come after those competitions have completed!
Though the competition was a success for Spain Park through the recognition of awards, all of the Spain Park students were still able to 1) Have Fun 2) Maintain Professionalism, and 3) Do Their Best, as per the philosophy of the academy.
