The Xanadu Process

The Theatre Department will produce the stage adaption of the iconically terrible 80’s movie Xanadu. Auditions were held the week of January 25th and the cast list was announced on Friday, January 29th. Due to concerns about the pandemic, half of the performances will be held outside in the courtyard, to allow fresh air and more space for social distancing. This plan, however, poses a new challenge for technical theatre students. Producing a show in the courtyard means that the set, lights, and sound system have to be disassembled after every show to be moved indoors. The flexibility required for this set and technical system has never been attempted before in Spain Park’s Theatre Department and as the show approaches the plans will likely shift and change, adapting to the changing COVID-19 situation.

Another challenging aspect in the production of this show is the use of roller skates. Roller

skating is a necessary plot point in the musical, so some of the actors will have to learn how to roller skate and perform tricks and spins, a challenge exaggerated by the brick flooring on the courtyard platform. The struggles in producing this show will pose an interesting challenge to technicians and performers alike, but the reward for their work will surely be worth it! Xanadu will be performed April 22nd through the 25th, with 7PM shows every day and 2PM matinees on Saturday and Sunday.
