Women’s History Month

Angel Smith

January, February… March! It’s finally March, meaning… Women’s History Month! March is such an important month to celebrate the women before us, such as Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and many other women who we celebrate this month. The question people frequently ask is why is there a Women’s History Month? Well, back in March 13, 1913, a women’s suffrage movement was taking place in which women were demanding the right to vote. So on March 22, 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment was passed in the Senate (although it never officially passed because of failed ratification). The holiday didn’t start getting recognized until the late 1970s in the United States, but later in the decade, a California task force created Women’s History Week. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared that March 8th was the official start date of Women’s History Week. By 1987, Congress declared that the whole month of March would be officially recognized as Women’s History Month. This is why Women’s History Month is now celebrated every year during March!
